A typical mobile crane may need a much larger working footprint once the outriggers are extended. That footprint must remain clear for the full lifting period.

Ground information is equally important. I ask about basements, drainage runs, recent excavations, service trenches, paving construction, and any areas that have been backfilled. Moving the crane by roughly 4 metres changed the lifting radius and required a larger machine.

I do not make engineering claims about ground capacity without supporting information. Where conditions are uncertain, I ask the responsible engineer or temporary works team to confirm what the surface can support and what spreader arrangement is required. That matters. A few timber mats placed by guesswork are not a substitute for a considered support plan.

I Build Delay Controls Into the Lift Day

I cannot remove every delay, but I can prevent many of them. I confirm that the load is on site, lifting points are accessible, accessories are available, and the installation crew understands the sequence. I also check whether scaffold, parked vehicles, skips, or material stacks have appeared in the crane area since the site survey. Construction sites change quickly, even during a single week.

Weather is another practical limit. Crane type, boom length, load shape, manufacturer guidance, and the lift plan all influence the acceptable conditions, so I avoid promising that every lift will proceed below one simple wind number. Large panels and roof sheets can become difficult to control before a compact load causes the same concern. I make sure the team knows who will decide whether work pauses and how that decision will be communicated.

I keep a fallback sequence where the project allows it. If the first delivery is delayed, the crane may be able to place another load, relocate materials, or complete a different planned lift. A customer last winter avoided several hours of idle time because we had agreed that three rooftop frames could be lifted in any order. That flexibility did not remove the delivery problem, but it stopped the whole operation from standing still.
